UN historic agreement to phase out HFC reduces emissions of climate gases

The 15th of October in Kigali some 200 countries decided on an amendment to the Montreal Protocol to phase out the use of potent warming greenhouse gases used as cooling medium in fridges and air conditioning. The measure has been described as the single most important step that the world can take to limit global warming. HFC was initially introduced as a substitute to other substances adding to ozone depletion. Unfortunately HFC has a high global warming potential.

The deal, received will avoid almost 0.5 degrees C warming by 2100. There are today alternatives to HFC as a cooling media. This agreement is not part of the agreement on climate change in Paris. Read more.
