CO2-emissions reduction scheme for EU shipping is launched
The European Maritime Safety Agency announced the launch of the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system that aims to support CO2 reduction within EU shipping operation. THETIS-MRV goes live on August 7 and is the first of several steps to reduce greenhouse gases from the maritime sector. The system enables operators calling EU ports to report their CO2-emissions which will be mandatory from 1st of January 2018. The emissions data will be public and updated on a yearly basis. The shipping MRV system was initiated by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Climate Action.
In order to maximize the impact of the regulation at lowest possible administrative burden on shipping companies and their operators, the rules apply only to ships above 5000 GT which account for around 55% of ships calling EU ports representing around 90% of the total shipping related CO2-emissions.
